4. The salary of a First Class Inspector, as
provided in the Estimates for 1901, is $1200 rising to $1368
by $66 yearly: but the Committee appointed to consider the sa-
laries of subordinate officers recommended that their sala-
ries should be increased to $1440 rising to $1560, and, acting
on the assumption that these rates would be approved, the Sa-
nitary Board further suggested that 3 Senior Inspectors" should
be obtained from home at a salary of $1800 rising to $2040 per
annum, in lieu of the 3 First Class Inspectors" for whom va-
cancies exist, and that a 2nd. Class Inspectorship, now vacant,
should be abolished.
5. If these recommendations are approved, a pro
tanto alteration will be necessary in the Estimates, viz., for
***
8 First Class Inspectors at $1200 (= $9,600), and 8 Second Class
Inspectors at $960 (= $7,680), involving a total annual expen-
diture of $17,280; there will be substituted 3 Senior Inspec-
tors at $1800 ( $6,400),5 First Class Inspectors at $1200
(= $6,000), and 7 Second Class Inspectors at $960 ( = $6,720),
involving a total annual expenditure of $18,120. The increase
in the Estimates will therefore amount to a sum of $840 per
annum, which is trifling in comparison with the great increase
in the efficiency of the staff of the Sanitary Board result-
ing from these alterations.
I have the honour to he,
Sir,
Your most obedient
Humble Servant.
